Don't Worry, Be Happy.

Don't Worry, Be Happy.

So a few weeks ago, I went for an interview and put my foot in my mouth from the minute I walked through the door to face the scary panel. For weeks my life had become about that job. If only I would get it and my life would finally begin. It’s like I was holding my breath waiting for that day which I thought was coming. Every prayer I prayed, every plan I made was tied to that one thing; the new job. Then that fateful interview occurred. Let me just say that the fall from cloud nine is not a fun one. For days after that dark day I was depressed. Why did God allow me to get my hopes up and go through all those interviews to that one only for me to make a gigantic fool out of myself? Wouldn’t it have been better if they had never shortlisted me from the beginning? What a waste of time! And what a pointless endeavour!

It wasn’t pointless. I learnt a thing or two about a thing a thing or two.

I want a new job and I am working towards it. God is aware that I want a better job. God is able to give me a better job and God is willing to give me a better job. However, God did not call me to comfortable. He called me to be useful.

If I can only be useful if I’m working at a fancy place in cuddly conditions then I’m a seriously high-maintenance-tool and God will use someone else who is more eager.

If I truly am a Christian, then Christ is my role model. Christ was not particularly comfortable on earth, but he was 100% efficient in terms of usefulness. After all, he did die for the sake of the mission.

Sometimes you just need to bring yourself up to speed on the situation on the ground. I need to let myself know that as much as I am looking for a better job, I have to be the best I can right where I am. I may be qualified and destined to be the CEO of Coca-Cola but if I’m a clerk right now, I’m a clerk. And I’m going to do the best that I can in this situation even as I look for better opportunities.

Same goes for money. At times you need to sit yourself down and say to yourself, “Madam, you are poor. You do not have the money for the lifestyle you are leading. You are not going to be poor forever but until the day you are filthy rich, you are going to live within your means. You are not going to take up any debts or get any loans. You will humble yourself and accept that you are poor. And you are going to be a good steward for ALL the resources God has given you. And you are going to be happy and thankful about it whether you like it or not.”

Sometimes we act as if we are too good to be poor or too good to be working in a lowly position. Humble yourself. You really don’t need a lot to be happy. And if you CAN be content and useful to God in the situation you are in, then he will not hesitate to use you in a comfier situation. However focus must be on usefulness and not comfort.

If your goal in life is to be more and more comfortable and glamorous, then you are never going to be happy because God has a way of humbling the proud. If you do not have the courage to live within your means, or to work your job that you feel is below you then you will find yourself in a sucky life.

Humble yourself. Submit to God and his will. Accept God’s decisions but do not give up trying to be better. If a situation does not come through, you just make the best of the current situation as you wait for new opportunities. Get as comfortable with a NO from God as you are with a YES from him. That will make you one of his most useful servants and there is nothing as wonderful as being used God and being used often.

The truth is, you’ve got to do your time. EVENTUALLY, things will work out for you. God will bless you better than you hoped but you’ve got to do your time. And you’ve got to be more concerned with usefulness than with comfort and glamour. And you’ve got to trust God to be there for you and to provide enough for you at all times. If you are whiny, unhappy and depressed unless you get your way with God, then you’d better get used to being whiny, unhappy and depressed.

So smile. Be happy. Be useful.

Matthew 6 : 32 ...For your heavenly Father knows that you need of all these things.33 But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you.

Mathew 6: 24 “No one can serve two masters. Either you will hate the one and love the other, or you will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and money.

Proverbs 3: 11 My son, do not despise the Lord’s discipline, and do not resent his rebuke,12 because the Lord disciplines those he loves, as a father the son he delights in.
