JESUS THE EXCLUSIVE WAY-(PART 1)

John 14:6 “Jesus said unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man comes unto the Father, but by me.”

Jesus here makes quite an exclusive declaration, wherein He defines Himself by three elements, viz., the way, the truth and the life, and immediately links these three elements with His function as a mediator in the statement that follows; “no man comes unto the Father but by Me”. In order to understand the exclusiveness which this declaration bears on Jesus, we shall attempt to separately link the mediation function of Jesus with these three elements.

Therefore, we shall look at the statement in three headings: that is,

(1) Jesus is the Way of the mediation, “ I am the way… no man comes unto the Father but by Me”;

(2) Jesus is the True Mediator, “ I am the Truth, … no man comes unto the Father but by Me; and

(3) Jesus the Life-giving Mediator, “I am the life, …, no man comes unto the Father but by Me”.

Each element must be seen in relation to the final phrase which is descriptive of Christ the Mediator.

PART 1: JESUS THE WAY OF THE MEDIATION.

The Federal Head and the Principle of Birth

John 14:6 “I am the way …. No man comes unto the Father but by Me”.

1 Cor. 15: 22 “For as in Adam all die, even so in the Christ shall all be made alive.”

John 3: 3 “Jesus answered and said unto him, verily, verily, I say unto you, Except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God”

The principle of birth by Adam the first parent resulted in the descendants of Adam taking after his fallen nature. Had he been perfect he would have passed on a perfect, but he could not pass on what he didn't possess. By passing on a sinful nature to his descendants through birth, Adam became the federal head or representative of all people who will be born through him, so that our acts of sin, inasmuch as they are individually done and each individual is personally responsible, they are essentially deeply rooted in the original sin which Adam committed. “For as in Adam all die …”

The fall of Man through one federal head (Adam) made it possible for Man to be redeemed also through another Federal Head, the second Adam, through the second birth, of which Jesus exclusively declared, “You must be born again”. It is this principle of birth that forms the basis of our argument. This declaration challenges any other belief that attempts to reconcile Man to God, for Jesus makes it clear that there is no other way apart from Himself.

“For as in Adam all die, even so in the Christ shall all be made alive.” Whereas the first Adam bequeathed a sinful nature and death to his offspring, the second Adam came as the “life-giving spirit” (1 Cor. 15:45), giving eternal life to those who are born again. From Him, a new creation is born (2 Cor. 5:17), bearing the semblance of His nature, partaking of His divine nature (2 Pet. 1:4; 1 Jn. 3:9) and as such, He becomes the Federal Head to those who are born again, giving them eternal life, and giving them access to the kingdom of God (Jn. 3:3). “Except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God”.

“Except a man be born of water and of the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God. That which is born of the flesh is flesh; and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit” (Jn. 3:5-6).The original natural birth must be outdone by a new spiritual birth. The original birth by flesh and the original sin must be undone by the second, spiritual birth. The way to God is not a way of good works, but a way of birth, and that is the logic behind the plan of redemption.

No descendant of Adam is fit enough to take the position of the mediator, the second Adam, because of sin. “For all have sinned, and fallen short of the glory of God”S such mediator would propagate the same sin as did Adam. The good works of men cannot suffice because they are not pure, but a mixture of good and evil. Beside Jesus, there is no other way, “For there is one God, and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus” (1 Tim. 2:5); He alone is the way to the Father. The Way to the Father is exclusive and narrow (Matt. 7:14); speaking of it the old prophets said, “And your ears shall hear a word behind you, saying, This is the way, walk ye in it, when you turn to the right hand, and when you turn to the left.” Isa. 30:21. “Thus says the LORD, Stand you in the ways, and see, and ask for the old paths, where the good way is, and walk in it, and you shall find rest for your souls. But they said, We will not walk in it.” Jer. 6:16.

The hope of humanity hangs on the balance of this God-Man Jesus Christ. Those who hold other hopes for atonement with God apart from new birth by Jesus Christ follow a way that leads to a dead end, for “There is a way which seems right unto a man, but the end thereof are the ways of death.” (Prov. 14:12. Therefore let every man be informed, God calls on all men to be born again and to believe in Jesus, who God has appointed the only Savior and Mediator between God and Man.
